Pipe Wrap vs Pipe Clamp: Which Leak Repair to Use

A leak in the pipe body—a crack, pinhole or damaged section—usually calls for a pipe repair wrap or a pipe repair clamp, not a flange sealant. Both stop many plant leaks without a full shutdown, but they work differently. This guide compares them so maintenance teams can pick the right InduMar repair for the job.

What is a pipe repair wrap?

A pipe repair wrap is a resin-coated tape wound around the damaged pipe. The Stop It® Pipe Repair System by InduMar is a fibreglass knitted tape coated with fast-setting, water-activated urethane resin, supplied with Fix Stix™ hand-mouldable epoxy.

  • Where it helps: cracks and leaks in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, galvanised, PVC, CPVC, PVDF, polyethylene, polypropylene and fibreglass pipes.
  • Service: chemical, steam, process and water lines. It can also be used underwater.
  • Why plants use it: one person can apply it, which helps cut downtime and free the rest of the crew.

What is a pipe repair clamp?

A pipe repair clamp is a mechanical band that seals a leak by tightening around the pipe. The Stop It® Pipe Repair Clamp is a stainless steel clamp with a PTFE gasket. It is tightened by hand, conforms to irregular surfaces, and offers strong chemical resistance. Clamps can be combined to fit larger pipe diameters.

For straight runs, Leak Control Kits C2 & C3 use corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel clamps: snap the clamp around the pipe, drop the bolt head through the slotted lug, and tighten the nuts. They suit water, wastewater, fuel, chemical, air and gas leaks.

When to choose a wrap

Choose a pipe repair wrap when the leak is a crack or damaged band of pipe that you can wrap around, including plastic as well as metal lines. Stop It® suits chemical, steam, process and water service, and can be applied underwater. If you need a small plug first, Fix Stix™ in the kit is a steel-reinforced, hand-mouldable epoxy for holes and cracks.

When to choose a clamp

Choose a pipe repair clamp when you want a hand-tightened stainless band with a PTFE gasket on an irregular surface, or when clamps must be combined for a larger diameter. Choose a Leak Control Kit when the leak sits on a straight run and a snap-on 304 stainless clamp with lugs and bolts is the faster fit.

Using wrap and clamp together

Some repairs use both: a clamp to hold pressure at a localised point, and a wrap to reinforce the surrounding pipe. Share the pipe material, size, pressure, temperature and fluid with us—we will say whether a wrap, a clamp, a kit, or a combination fits best. Browse the full range in Pipe Repair & Leak Control.

Related repairs: Fix Stix™ and Fusion Tape™

Fix Stix™ Epoxy is a steel-reinforced putty that plugs leaks, fills holes and cracks, and bonds with steel. Each stick is pre-measured resin and activator.

Fusion Tape™ is a self-bonding, self-fusing silicone tape. It needs no heat or tools and suits tears and rips in wires, pipes and hoses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pipe repair clamp?

A pipe repair clamp is a stainless band tightened around a leaking pipe to stop the leak. The Stop It® Pipe Repair Clamp uses a PTFE gasket for chemical resistance, conforms to irregular surfaces, and is tightened by hand. Clamps can be combined for larger diameters.

How do you use a fibreglass pipe repair wrap?

With the Stop It® system, the fibreglass knitted tape is coated with water-activated urethane resin. Activate the resin with water, wrap the tape over the prepared leak (often after plugging small holes with Fix Stix™), and allow it to set. One person can apply it; follow the kit instructions for your size and service.

Pipe wrap or clamp — which should I use for a leaking pipe?

Use a wrap for cracks and leaks that need a resin-bonded fibreglass build-up around metal or plastic pipe, including underwater work. Use a Stop It® clamp for irregular surfaces and chemical service with a PTFE gasket, or a Leak Control Kit for straight runs. Send us the line details if you are unsure.

How long will a pipe repair clamp last?

Service life depends on pressure, temperature, fluid and pipe condition. We do not quote a single lifespan on the product page—share your operating conditions and we will recommend the right clamp or wrap for the duty.

Can a Stop It® wrap be used on PVC and underwater?

Yes. The Stop It® Pipe Repair System lists PVC (and CPVC, PVDF, polyethylene, polypropylene and fibreglass) among the pipe materials it repairs, and it is suitable for use underwater as well as on chemical, steam, process and water lines.
