Frequently Asked Questions
Which industries use Plast-O-Matic thermoplastic valves?
Chemical processing, water and wastewater treatment, metal finishing, PC board fabrication, pulp and paper, and battery manufacturing for corrosive liquids, plus semiconductor, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and laboratory work for high-purity liquids.
What materials are the valves made of?
Depending on the series, PVC, CPVC, polypropylene and PVDF (Kynar®).
What is the difference between CPVC and uPVC pipes?
uPVC (Astral Aquarius Plus) has a maximum recommended service temperature of 60°C and is used for cold water and process lines. CPVC (Astral Chem Pro) can be used up to 93°C, intermittently 110°C, and has excellent resistance to mineral acids and bases, so it suits hot and chemical lines.
What is the maximum temperature for CPVC pipes?
Astral Chem Pro CPVC can be used up to 93°C, and intermittently up to 110°C. Pressure ratings are given at 23°C and reduce as temperature rises. Ask us for the derating table for your line size.
Which valve material is best for hydrochloric acid?
It depends on the acid concentration and temperature. Plast-O-Matic offers PVC, CPVC, PP and PVDF bodies for corrosive service, and Astral publishes a chemical resistance chart for Chem Pro CPVC. Send us the concentration, temperature and pressure, and we will check the chart and recommend a material. Our catalogues do not give a single rule for hydrochloric acid.
PVDF or polypropylene valves: which should I choose?
Both are offered for corrosive and high-purity service. In the flow control range, PP and PVDF bodies are rated 5–82°C, against 5–60°C for PVC. Our catalogues do not give a full PP-versus-PVDF chemical comparison, so share your liquid details and we will confirm the right body material.
What does a check valve do, and what cracking pressure do they have?
A check valve lets liquid flow one way and closes against backflow. Plast-O-Matic CK/CKM normally-closed check valves open at about 1.0–1.5 PSI, in ½", ¾" and 1" sizes, with threaded or socket ends.
Can a solenoid valve handle corrosive chemicals?
Yes. Plast-O-Matic solenoid valves are made in PVC, PP and PVDF for corrosive liquids, with a NEMA 4X coil option.
How can a pipe leak be fixed without shutting down the line?
For plant pipework we supply Stop It® pipe repair kits and CheckSeal online leak sealants. The right method depends on the pipe material, pressure, temperature and the liquid in the line, so share these details and we will suggest a product.
What is a process cooling water stick (PCWS/PCWR)?
A process cooling water stick is a ready-made supply (PCWS) or return (PCWR) piping assembly for process cooling water lines, designed for simple, strong installation. Plast-O-Matic Series PCWS and PCWR can be built with the valves, flow and pressure controls, gauges, flowmeters and connection types your line needs, and Series ECWS and ECWR are standard assemblies for quick delivery. See Process Cooling Water Sticks.
What is injectable valve packing?
Injectable valve packing is a valve stem packing compound that is pumped into the valve with a high-pressure lubrication gun. Our Chemola Desco injectable packing is pumpable with a 10,000 psi handgun and works in water and steam service at high and low temperatures, including sub-zero. See Injectable Valve Packing.
What is Stop It pipe repair?
Stop It® by InduMar is a pipe repair system made of fibreglass knitted tape coated with fast-setting, water-activated urethane resin, supplied with Fix Stix™ hand-mouldable epoxy. It repairs cracks and leaks in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, galvanised, PVC, CPVC, PVDF, polyethylene, polypropylene and fibreglass pipes, can be used underwater, and one person can apply it. See Stop It® Pipe Repair System.
What is online leak sealing?
Online leak sealing means sealing a leak on a valve, flange or fitting while the line stays in service. For this we supply CheckSeal online leak repair sealants: a non-curing compound of non-asbestos fibres in synthetic oils that stays pliable, used on flange gaskets, valve stems, drain plugs and couplings in water and steam service, and together with clamps and pipe wrap. See Online Leak Repair Sealants.
Which online sealing products do you supply?
CheckSeal online leak repair sealants for flanges, valve stems and couplings; Chemola Desco injectable valve packing for valve stems; and InduMar Stop It® pipe repair wraps and clamps for pipe leaks. Tell us what is leaking, the line size and the service, and we'll suggest the right product.
What lubricant should be used for gate, ball and plug valves?
We supply Chemola™ Desco synthetic valve lubricants and sealants. They are chosen by service: for example, grades for hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulfide, high-temperature hot oil and steam, or low-temperature (arctic) service. Tell us the valve type and the liquid, and we will recommend a grade.
